Connect Your Apps to ChatGPT & Claude: A Beginner's Guide

Connect Your Apps to ChatGPT & Claude: A Beginner's Guide cover

Once you’re comfortable chatting with ChatGPT or Claude, you may notice they can also connect to other apps you already use — your email, your calendar, your files. That can save real time, but it also means being deliberate about what you allow. This guide walks through what a “connection” actually is, how to set one up in either ChatGPT or Claude, and how to keep it safe. Take it one step at a time. There is no rush.

What “connecting an app” means, in plain words

A connection lets ChatGPT or Claude securely request information from another service you choose — like your Gmail or Google Calendar. Some connections can also perform actions, like creating an event, if the service and your account allow it. Connecting an app does not mean the AI gets unlimited access to everything — every connection involves three pieces: the AI service (ChatGPT or Claude), the outside service you’re linking (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and so on), and the permission screen where you decide exactly what it’s allowed to see or do.

Four things you can do right now

1. Connect an app in ChatGPT

Open ChatGPT Settings > Apps to see what’s available and manage your connections. Find the app you want in the list, choose Connect (or Install, if that’s shown), and sign in to the outside service. Read carefully which account you’re connecting and what data the app can access before you approve — Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive are commonly available, though exactly what’s offered can depend on your plan.

2. Connect an app in Claude

Open Claude’s Connectors area, choose the cloud service you want, and click Connect. Sign in to the outside service and approve the access it requests. Remote connectors like this are generally available on paid Claude plans. Note that Claude Desktop also has a separate Settings → Extensions area for connecting local tools and files on your own computer — that’s a different thing from a remote cloud connector, and worth using only when you genuinely need local access.

3. Test the connection before relying on it

Ask a harmless, read-only question that requires the new connection — something like “What’s on my calendar tomorrow?” or “Find the latest file about the remodel.” If it works, check the answer against the actual source once, just to confirm you connected the right account. If it doesn’t work, double-check the connection itself and your plan.

4. Understand read access versus action access

Read access lets the AI retrieve information — check a calendar, find a document, summarize an email. Action access may let it create, change, send, or delete something. Review each requested action before you approve it, and as a general rule, give the least amount of access that still solves your problem — you can always grant more later if you need it.

A word about what not to connect

Skip connecting banking apps, password managers, highly sensitive health records, or any work account you’re not authorized to link — the convenience isn’t worth the exposure. Before sending a message, modifying a file, creating an appointment, or submitting a form through a connected app, review the exact action first, and check the result afterward. AI can misread instructions or act on the wrong item, so a quick second look protects you either way.
