Claude for Chrome Made Simple: A Beginner's Guide

Claude for Chrome Made Simple: A Beginner's Guide cover

Claude for Chrome lets an AI assistant look at the webpage you’re viewing and even click and type on your behalf, with your permission. That’s genuinely useful — and it’s also a feature worth approaching carefully, a step at a time, rather than turning loose on everything at once. This guide shows you how to install it, try it safely, and understand the one big risk to watch for. Take it slow. There is no rush.

What Claude for Chrome is, in plain words

Claude for Chrome is Anthropic’s official browser extension for the Google Chrome browser. Once installed, it can read the page you’re on, and — if you allow it — navigate, click, type, and fill in forms for you. It’s available on paid Claude plans, and Anthropic itself describes it as a higher-risk browser feature, which is exactly why we recommend starting slow and sticking to sites you trust.

Five things you can do right now

1. Check what you need first

Claude for Chrome only works in the Google Chrome browser on a computer — it is not a mobile extension, and it isn’t supported in other Chromium-based browsers. You’ll also need an eligible paid Claude plan and an up-to-date copy of Chrome before you begin.

2. Install the extension and pin it to your toolbar

Open the Chrome Web Store, search for the official Claude in Chrome extension, and click Add to Chrome. Sign in with your Claude account when asked. Then click the puzzle-piece Extensions icon in Chrome, find Claude, and click the pin so its icon stays visible in your toolbar — that makes the side panel easy to open later.

3. Open the side panel and start with a read-only task

Click the Claude icon to open the side panel beside the website you’re viewing. For your first try, stick to something read-only, like “Summarize this page” or “Compare these two tabs,” and review what Claude reports. Save banking, passwords, and sensitive records for later — reading is a much safer first test than letting it change anything.

4. Understand the two permission modes

Claude for Chrome can ask you to approve each action one at a time (manual approval), or it can be allowed to take more actions without stopping (automatic approval). While you’re still learning how it behaves, stick with manual approval — more automation means less chance to catch a mistake before it happens.

5. Know the biggest risk: prompt injection

A webpage can contain hidden instructions designed to manipulate a browser AI into doing something you didn’t ask for. If Claude ever starts acting strangely on a page — trying something you didn’t request, or behaving oddly — stop the task right away. Don’t assume built-in safety checks catch everything; use trusted sites and keep an eye on what it’s doing.
