YouTube Made Simple: A Beginner's Guide

If you have ever wanted to watch a video someone mentioned, or search for a “how to” without knowing where to start, YouTube can feel like a lot at first — recommended videos everywhere, ads that pop up, and buttons you haven’t seen before. This guide walks you through the everyday basics: searching for a video, controlling playback, using captions, and staying comfortable with what shows up on your screen. Take it one step at a time. There is no rush.
What YouTube is, in plain words
YouTube is a video website where people and companies upload videos on almost any topic — cooking, music, news, tutorials, hobbies, and much more. You can watch videos without an account, but signing in with a Google account lets you subscribe to channels you like and keep track of things you’ve watched. Your screen may look slightly different on a phone than on a computer, but the same basic steps work either way.
Five things you can do right now
1. Search for a video
Tap or click the Search icon (usually a magnifying glass), type what you’re looking for — a topic, a show name, or a person’s name — and press Enter or tap Search. YouTube will show a list of matching videos. Tap the one that looks right to open and start watching it.
2. Play, pause, and control the volume
Once a video is open, tap or click anywhere on the video to play or pause it. On a phone, tapping the screen usually brings up the playback controls if they aren’t already showing. Use the volume buttons on your device, or the volume icon on the video itself if you’re on a computer, to adjust how loud it is. Dragging the small circle on the progress bar near the bottom lets you jump forward or back in the video.
3. Turn on captions and go full screen
If you want to read along with what’s being said, look for the CC (captions) icon near the bottom of the video and tap it to turn captions on or off. To make the video fill your whole screen, tap or click the full screen icon, usually an icon that looks like diagonal arrows or a small frame in the corner of the video — tapping it again, or pressing a device’s back button, will return you to the normal view.
4. Subscribe to a channel you like
If you enjoy a particular creator’s videos and want to see more from them, open one of their videos or their channel page and tap the Subscribe button. This does not cost anything — it simply means new videos from that channel are easier to find later. You can unsubscribe the same way at any time if you change your mind.
5. Stay comfortable with ads and recommendations
YouTube is free to use because it shows ads before or during some videos; most can be skipped after a few seconds by tapping Skip Ad when it appears. Below a video you’ll usually see a list of “recommended” videos chosen based on what you’ve watched — you’re never required to watch them, and it’s fine to just close the app or go back to search for something specific instead. As with any website, be cautious of video titles or comments that pressure you to click a link, download something, or “verify your account” — when in doubt, it’s always safe to simply back out and search for what you actually wanted.
