Google Maps Made Simple: A Beginner's Guide to Directions

If you have ever opened Google Maps and felt unsure which button gets you moving, you are not alone. Finding a place and getting there safely does not have to be confusing. This guide walks you through searching for a place, getting directions, starting navigation, and saving the addresses you use most. Take it one step at a time. There is no rush — and always trust real road signs over what’s on the screen.
What Google Maps is, in plain words
Google Maps helps you find places, see exactly where you are right now, and get step-by-step directions — whether you are driving, walking, or taking public transit. It can also help you find something nearby, like a pharmacy or gas station, when you need it. Your screen may look slightly different depending on your phone, but the same basic steps work either way.
Four things you can do right now
1. Open Maps and confirm your location
Open Google Maps and look for the blue dot — that’s you. If the map is not centered on your location, tap the location or target button to recenter it. Location services need to be turned on for this to work accurately, so this is the first thing worth checking if the map ever seems off.
2. Search for a place and get directions
Tap the search box and type an address or a place name — if there are similar names nearby, check the city and state to make sure you have the right one. Once you find it, tap Directions, confirm your starting point, and choose driving, walking, transit, or another mode. Always review the route before you tap Start and begin moving.
3. Start navigation and use voice guidance
Tap Start to begin turn-by-turn directions, and listen for the first instruction. Keep your phone secured — in a mount or holder — and rely on the voice directions rather than looking at the screen while driving. If you want to avoid tolls or highways, open the route options before you start and turn those preferences on; just know that avoiding tolls can sometimes make a trip longer.
4. Save Home and other important places
Search your home address once, then choose Save and label it Home when Maps offers to — this makes every future trip home just one tap. You can do the same for other places you visit often, like a doctor’s office, a pharmacy, or a family member’s house, by opening the place, tapping Save, and choosing or creating a list such as “Doctors” or “Family.”
