Google Docs Made Simple: A Beginner's Guide to Writing Online cover

If you have ever needed to write a letter, a list, or a set of notes and weren’t sure where to start on a computer, Google Docs makes it simple — no software to install, and your work saves itself as you go. This guide walks you through creating a document, editing text, saving a copy, and sharing it safely with exactly the people you choose. Take it one step at a time. There is no rush.

What Google Docs is, in plain words

Google Docs lets you write documents right in your web browser or in an app — think of it as a notepad that saves itself automatically and that you can open from any computer or phone once you sign in. You never need to remember to press Save. Once a document is written, you can share it with other people and decide exactly what they’re allowed to do with it: just look at it, leave comments, or make changes. That sharing control is one of the most important parts of using Docs well.

Four things you can do right now

1. Create a document and give it a clear name

Open Google Docs, choose Blank or the + button, and click or tap into the page to start typing — there’s no need to press Save after every change. Click the title at the top, type a clear name like “Grocery List” or “Letter to City Council,” and press Enter. A good, specific name makes the document much easier to find later.

2. Edit text with confidence

Click or tap wherever you want to make a change, then type, delete, or select text as needed. If you ever make a mistake, use Undo — it is your safety net, so use it freely and don’t worry about experimenting. You can also select text and use the style menu to add headings, or the bullet and numbered list buttons to organize a long document into something easier to read.

3. Save a copy as a PDF or print it

Open File, choose Download, then PDF Document, and you’ll find the file in your Downloads folder — a PDF is useful whenever you want the layout to stay exactly as it looks on screen. To print instead, open File, then Print, choose your printer, preview the pages, and print. It’s worth checking the page count first if the document is long.

4. Share the document with the right person, the right way

Click Share, enter the person’s email address, and choose their role: Viewer can only read it, Commenter can read and leave notes, and Editor can actually change the document — give Editor access only to people you trust with your file. Under general access, Restricted means only the people you’ve specifically added can open the document, which is the safer default for anything private; Anyone with the link is more open, since a link can be forwarded to others.
